what is a Neck Lift
Neck lift (also known as lower rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the neck and jawline by addressing signs of aging or sagging skin. It is often sought by individuals looking to achieve a smoother, more youthful contour in the neck area.
Key Goals of a Neck Lift:
- Tighten Loose Skin: Eliminates sagging or wrinkled skin often referred to as “turkey neck.”
- Remove Excess Fat: Addresses fat deposits under the chin or along the jawline to reduce a double chin.
- Tighten Neck Muscles: Corrects muscle banding (vertical lines in the neck) for a smoother appearance.
- Enhance Jawline Definition: Improves the transition between the neck and jaw for a more sculpted look.

What to expect from your customized neck lift procedure
The neck lift procedure is an outpatient surgery requiring IV sedation or general anesthesia. You and Dr. Hyman will discuss which option is best for you. There are two types of neck lift procedures:
- Traditional neck lift – An incision will start at the hairline above each of your ears and continue around your ear to your lower scalp. A third incision will be made under your chin. Dr. Hyman can then adjust, reposition, or tighten your neck muscles and tissues as needed. Excess skin will be removed, and your incisions are then closed meticulously.
- Limited incision neck lift – Incisions are made around the ear only. This procedure is intended for patients who need a less comprehensive neck lift.
Recovery and Aftercare for Neck Lift Surgery
Initial Recovery (First 1–2 Weeks):
- Rest: Allow your body to heal by resting adequately. Avoid strenuous activities during this time.
- Swelling and Bruising: Expect swelling and bruising, which will gradually subside. Use cold compresses to minimize discomfort but avoid direct application to the skin.
- Head Position: Keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, to reduce swelling. Avoid twisting or bending your neck excessively.
- Dressing Care: Follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding bandages or compression garments, which help support the neck and reduce swelling.
Pain Management:
- Take prescribed pain medications as directed to stay comfortable. Avoid over-the-counter medications like aspirin unless approved by your surgeon, as they can increase bleeding risks.
Wound Care:
- Keep incisions clean and dry. Follow your surgeon’s guidance for cleaning and applying ointments to prevent infection and promote healing.
Return to Normal Activities:
- Most patients can return to light activities within 1–2 weeks. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or exercise for at least 4–6 weeks.
Minimize Scarring:
- Avoid sun exposure on incision sites for at least six months. Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect scars and promote better healing.
Follow-Up Appointments:
- Attend all follow-up visits with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.
Long-Term Healing (2–6 Months):
- Swelling and tightness will continue to improve over several months. Be patient, as it may take up to six months to see the final results.
- Practice good skincare, stay hydrated, and maintain a healthy diet to support optimal recovery.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol:
- Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for several weeks, as they can slow the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
By closely following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions, you can ensure a smoother recovery and achieve optimal results from your neck lift surgery.
